One of my favorite aspects of RoboCop, and specifically the script from writers Michael Miner and Edward Neumeier, is that it is as smart as you want it to be.
If you want RoboCop to be an indictment of ‘80s corporate greed, it can be that. If you want RoboCop to be a commentary on the rise of violent crime amidst the widening wealth gap in America, it can be that. If you want RoboCop to be a parody of the mindless, nationalistic ultraviolence of ‘80s action movies, it can be that.
Or if you want it to simply be a fun action movie about a robot cop kicking ass, it can be that too.
A child can love RoboCop just as much as a middle-age professor of sociology, but for completely different reasons. There’s something beautiful about that.
